Each year, the Des Moines Register sponsors what has become an international bike-riding event. Called RAGBRAI, for Register's Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, the event departed on July 20, 2008 from the Missouri Valley and finished on July 26, 2008 in LeClair, IA, a total of 471 miles. The course brought thousands of bicyclists through Lisbon after leaving North Liberty on a circuitous route ending the day in Tipton.
The riders entered on Lisbon on Friday, July 25 by way of South Washington Street from Sutliff, crossed Highway 30 then went west from downtown Lisbon on West Main and Lisbon Road (the Old Lincoln Highway) toward Mt. Vernon.
Community groups in Lisbon held a gala reception for the riders with many street-side events.
Co-Chairs of the Lisbon activities are Bob Hill and Beryl O'Connor.
